MMath Mathematics, Sheffield University - 2007
After spending 4 years at University studying Maths, I decided to go into a career that offered variety, but still used a lot of the skills that I had developed in my studies. Solaglas offered a great opportunity in that I could try various roles in the first 5 years and develop my skills in all of them.
I started with Solaglas in August 2007, based at Windowcare in Rotherham. I quickly realised that when they said ‘you’ll be put right in the deep end’, they weren’t lying. I went straight into a real role, which there was a business need for. A job hadn’t just been created for me.
My first role involved me implementing a helpdesk, to try and control the manner and type of requests being made for the IT department. This was quite daunting as I was a new face, and was coming in to change a process that the whole of Windowcare worked by.
The Helpdesk is now up and running and has proven to be a success. Since then I have been project managing the roll out of new document management software, and designing a program to contain information to better understand our customers and our market.
My first role on the helpdesk was invaluable. I managed to understand the way the whole business ran, and have knowledge of how each department wanted to move forward to develop and be better. The helpdesk affected everyone and because of this I got exposure for being hard working and dedicated, and earned respect around the business.
I am now looking to move on to my next role within Windowcare. There are so many opportunities in Solaglas that often it can be hard to decide which one to take. I have had a fantastic experience so far and made some great friends here. I feel like I always have support and am recognised for the work I put in. Although sometimes it can be hard, and the hours can be long, everything has its rewards and you develop in so many ways. I would certainly recommend Solaglas to any of my friends.
