MEng Manufacturing Engineering, Warwick University - 2003
After returning back to the UK after a round the world trip I knew that I longed for a career that kept me on my toes and maybe in one place! Solaglas certainly hasn't disappointed me.
I moved to Coventry to begin my first job of installing a major piece of machinery at our Belfast plant. After spending one month in hotels on both sides of the Irish Sea I found myself a house to rent near Coventry. After just two weeks of settling in I was offered another job opportunity at our London branch.
I spent the next year in London in Sales and Estimating, where I built up my business and product knowledge, as well as improving my customer management skills. I continue to use all of these skills to this day.
After 12 months in London I was ready for my next challenge and another move - this time as an E-Business Project Manager based in Coventry. My job scope was vast as it encompassed numerous things including integrating our new Sales Order Entry & Production Planning system with the group's IT systems and establishing electronic ordering links directly with the our largest customers.
One year on, and just as I was getting comfortable with my e-business role, I was asked if I was interested in getting involved with a pricing project for our Glass Processing Division. The challenge was exactly what I needed to further my career - so of course I said yes!
However, before moving on to my new role I had to train another graduate to take on my job, and simultaneously carrying out some essential staff training at our London business - for which I had previously gained the knowledge and skills required. After one very busy month, the London employees were much better equipped to deal with the demands of their customers, and my successor was up to speed in the world of e-business. After the training I returned to Coventry to finalise the installation of a major piece of IT hardware, and to ensure a smooth transition of my responsibilities to my successor.
In February 2007 I started work on the UK phase of a European wide pricing project. I was tasked with creating a suite of profitability analysis tools that senior management could use to thoroughly analyse their business’ performance. The job taught me a whole host of invaluable business skills which I would have never learnt in such a short space of time elsewhere.
On completion of the pricing project in September 2007 I moved on to a new role; Fire Glass Business Development Manager. My challenge is to develop the fire rated glass sales across all of Solaglas’ business units, and to work very closely with our sister company Vetrotech. My job scope is vast and the challenges I face are enormous, but it is exactly what I need to continue on moving up the career ladder!
